Serving as a place of refuge continued well into the 20th Century. Christians burrowed beneath Derinkuyu to save themselves from the Ottoman wave of persecution as late as 1909.

The massive lair was not simply a hiding place but rather it was a safe haven as well. The complex underground had a safety system that made it almost impenetrable. Each entrance was only big enough to fit a single person through at a time.
