Banned For Insulting Opponents
Solo made the news for some not so sportsmanlike comments in reference to her Swedish opponents. During the Rio game between America and Sweden, America took a loss, which Solo accredited to the Swedes focusing on defense rather than offense. Thus, she called them ‘a bunch of cowards,’ and this was not taken lightly. In fact, the President of American Soccer, Sunil Gulati commented that what she said was, “unacceptable and do not meet the standard of conduct we require from our national team players”. Solo was suspended for six months.
