Chippendale’s Audition
Patrick Swayze and Chris Farley competed for a position as a Chippendale’s performer in a sketch that aired on SNL in 1990. Some of Farley’s fellow comedians have speculated that the sketch was detrimental to his mental health, despite the fact that the sketch has long been a fan favorite. In 2008, Chris Rock wrote, “Chippendales was an odd farce. I always detested it… The joke is essentially, ‘We can’t employ you because you’re overweight.’ There is no humorous conclusion. It’s just… cruel. Chris desired so desperately to be appreciated. As humorous as that sketch was, it contributed to his demise. Beyond Farley, the overall flavor of the sketch has been questioned. The Washington Post wrote in 2018: “It’s funny — or at least it was — because Farley, dancing shirtless to Loverboy’s “Working for the Weekend,” portrays himself as ugly. However, that was 28 years ago, and body shaming is no longer cool or funny.”
Alec Baldwin’s Scoutmaster
During one of Alec Baldwin’s several guest hosting appearances in the 1990s, he portrayed a scoutmaster who made unwanted attempts toward Canteen Boy, Adam Sandler’s boy scout character. Despite the fact that Sandler was officially an adult, many viewers panned the sketch. The Boy Scouts of America issued a statement saying, “We see nothing funny about child molestation, and are surprised that this unfunny subject would be selected for a comedy sketch.”
