It is enough space to keep them healthy. The bushes can outlive the gardener and even the property if you take good care of them. If you ever see a lonely lilac bush on a country road, there was likely a house there once.

There is a good chance that the house once had an outhouse. In the past, farmers would plant lilac bushes close to these places to overpower the stench that came from the shed. Lilacs do not usually bloom for a long period of time, however. The scents would only stay there for two weeks or so. Aside from that, a farmer uprooted the outhouse when it got full. After this, they would add a fresh bush in the old hole! It is not a stretch to say that the lilac bush has always been the air freshener of nature.
