The Victorians
According to the theory, the mid and late-19th century Victorians wanted to decorate their homes with paints and things that remind them of the natural world. This means that they preferred earthy colors like terracotta and ochre. By doing this, they get a sense of the outdoors, even inside of their house. It is a great way to freshen up space.
An Extension Of The Sky
It looks like the Victorians picked blue for the porch ceilings for this reason. They wanted to think of the clear skies no matter what the weather was actually like outside. The theory does not come with any hint of a shameful part of history that others think that haint blue represents. Even though O’Neill did not namecheck these folks, in particular, she did seem to agree that blue made them think of the sky.
