As he focused on the filth below, he could hear the noises again, this time more clearly. Even squinting, Dave could only see the gloom below. Someone or something was clearly in danger, in Dave’s opinion. How could he be the only person in such a crowded place to notice this? He felt compelled to act in response to this threat.

Dave said that he first tried to remove the sewer pipe’s cover. It remained still. He tried again with all of his strength, this time using a metal pole he found nearby as a lever. Because the pipe was plainly rusted in place, no movement was possible. Dave looked around. Others who had been watching him from afar dared to approach him now.
