Charlie Batch

Charlie Batch, the quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers, came close to losing his beloved Super Bowl rings when business issues forced him to file for bankruptcy in 2011. According to the sports salary website Spotrac.com, his NFL contract paid him approximately $935,000 per year, but he was reportedly in debt to the tune of over $8.3 million at the time of his bankruptcy filing. His real estate businesses defaulted on a $1.15 million mortgage with Dollar Bank, and Batch Development Company, Inc., which owned 25 properties, was placed into receivership as a result. The batch remained with the Steelers for another season before deciding to retire from the game. Presently, he contributes to Steelers broadcasts and other media venues, in addition to serving as Senior Captain for The Trust Powered by the NFLPA and a Transition Consultant for the NFLPA.

Deuce McAllister

Upon signing a seven-year contract extension with the New Orleans Saints in 2005, the former running back became the NFL’s second highest-paid running back at the time, earning a total of $50.1 million over the course of the contract. McAllister, on the other hand, would go on to apply for bankruptcy protection four years after signing the agreement, following the failure of a failing automobile dealership. Nissan filed a lawsuit against McAllister in 2000, alleging that the company had defaulted on payments and had violated credit restrictions. According to McAllister’s counterclaim, Nissan was aware that he “was a young professional athlete with no prior experience in the motor vehicle sales business” and that the company withheld information about profitability in the area. Nissan has not responded to the counterclaim. Similarly, Whitney National Bank took McAllister’s home in Luling in 2011 because the bank claims that he owes it $1.8 million in mortgage payments. The home was auctioned off for $880,000 in 2011.
