It existed from the thirteenth through the fourteenth centuries and is currently considered the world’s largest empire. This map depicts the empire’s extent in 1279. The empire spanned nine million square miles at its peak.

Lithuania came up with arguably the most inventive way to entice visitors to visit: a map of the country constructed entirely of magnets, with each magnet available exclusively in specific cities.
