Nunnally Johnson, an Oscar nominee, wrote the script for The Dirty Dozen. However, the cast members who helped in bringing his remarks to life on screen were allowed to improvise on occasion. Take, for example, Borgnine. His General Worden almost chokes in rage when he learns of the soldiers’ pranks – an utterly unscripted incident.
