A Supposed Adventure Comedy
Kelly’s Heroes was supposed to be an adventure comedy picture, as anyone who has seen it knows. Although it contained some scenes depicting the horrors of war, it was ultimately intended to be a family-friendly escapade. But then a producer stepped in and ruined the enjoyment.
Nobody Should’ve Died
Spoiler alert: three of the greedy American servicemen — Corporal Job, Private Grace, and Private Mitchell – are killed in action about 70 minutes into the film. Two of them are killed by German gunfire, while the other is killed by a mine that explodes. Sutherland expressed his dissatisfaction afterward, saying, “Nobody died. At least they didn’t die in the original script, but then some idiot producer […] insisted that there had to be deaths. Brian [G. Hutton] fought it, didn’t want it, but money shouted so Brian ended up giving him a minefield.”
