The Icon Who Played Kelly
One name in the star-studded ensemble cast of Kelly’s Heroes stands out a little bit more than the others. Clint Eastwood is his name. He was already a movie megastar thanks to films like A Fistful of Dollars, Where Eagles Dare, and The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly, which made him a Hollywood icon.
Eastwood Almost Didn’t Play Kelly
However, Eastwood’s role as Kelly almost didn’t happen. The legendary actor agreed to star in the film on the condition that his close friend and key creative collaborator Don Siegel would direct it. However, the director, who was winding up the picture Two Mules for Sister Sara at the time, was suddenly faced with a slew of post-production issues. As a result, Siegel had to step down, and Brian G. Hutton was chosen to take his place. Fortunately, Eastwood had already signed the dotted line and was unable to back out.
