Awkward Moment

The very first interview Charles and Diana gave once they became engaged in 1981 had a pretty awkward moment. This might have been yet another sign that they weren’t going to end up well. When the interviewer asked the two if they were in love, Charles turned to Diana as if he looked to see what she would say. “Of course,” she said with a scoff. Charles then said, “Well, whatever in love means.” Yikes.

A lot of what we know about Princess Diana’s personal life is due to the audiotapes she herself recorded. Once she realized her marriage to Prince Charles was falling apart, she recorded her side of the story on a series of tapes. She then gave them to her close friend, Dr. James Colthurst. He then gave them to journalist Andrew Morton. From them, Morton published the biography DIANA: Her True Story—In Her Own Words in 1992. Until after she died, no one knew Diana had a hand in the book’s production.
