I always felt like a shadow in my parents’ eyes as a child. Their focus was always on my younger brother, Brandon, the family’s golden child, regardless of what I did. I was therefore not shocked when they dismissed the invitation after my wedding date was decided. They stated, “We have Brandon’s football game,” without even inquiring about the nature of the “event.” They had no idea that my wedding was the occasion they so casually disregarded, and the consequences were going to be disastrous.

My parents have consistently ranked me second ever since Brandon was born twenty years ago. He absolutely hates me and is aware that he has their undivided attention. Over the years, Brandon either got sick or had his own event whenever I had a significant occasion. I knew it would be difficult to invite them to my wedding. I had to try, but they’d undoubtedly come up with another reason to put Brandon before me.
