Jesse Owens, An American Athlete, Receives His Gold Medal In The Long Jump.
It was the 1936 Olympic Games, which were being held in Nazi-occupied Germany at the time of writing. A difficult choice had to be made by the Amateur Athletic Union as to whether or not a participation in the Berlin competition was a good decision for the United States. After much deliberation, it was determined that American athletes would participate, albeit in a reduced capacity. The Civil Rights organizations urged him not to compete, but Owens was adamant and wanted to demonstrate his abilities to the world. When he arrived in Berlin, he was met with a cold reception. He was made fun of by the audience, and he was undoubtedly the victim of unfair treatment. After all, was said and done, he made everyone regret their words by winning four gold medals! This is the most gold medal ever won by an American in track and field competition.
Charlie Chaplin And Winston Churchill Were Close Friends.
The British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, was a tremendous fan of Charlie Chaplin. Although they maintained opposing political viewpoints, the duo shared mutual respect and regard for one another. Moreover, Churchill invited Chaplin to be a visitor at Chartwell on more than one occasion! When the couple traveled to the United States in 1929, they spent some time together. Having just returned from a reception held by William Randolph Hearst, they went to the Biltmore Hotel for dinner. After the City Lights premiere, Chaplin flew to England, where he met Winston Churchill for supper at the latter’s private apartment. They had a nice laugh about politics while they were having fun with the kids together.
