Throughout his 40-year career, Ernst Haas walked a fine line between being a photojournalist and being a fine art photographer. He incorporated elements of beauty into his photographs of troops returning from combat. The desperation and bewilderment that pervaded Europe in the aftermath of the Holocaust were captured in a photo essay titled “Homecoming,” which he published on his website. His impressive collection aided him in achieving even more success. He said no to each and every one of them. “All I want is to be able to carry out my own ideas without interference.” I don’t believe there are many editors who would be willing to give me tasks on my own.
