Clapton’s anguish over Conor’s death may have been exacerbated by his lack of a mother or father as a child. In 1944, Clapton’s father, Canadian soldier Edward Fryer, spent the evening with Clapton’s mother, Pat Clapton. Pat, on the other hand, was just 15 years old and had no desire to have children. Clapton’s mother, you see, moved to Canada when he was a toddler with another man.

My Father’s Eyes
Clapton grew up assuming that his grandma Rose was his mother as a result. And when Pat showed up, he mistook her for an elder sister, as she did on occasion. Clapton, on the other hand, was visibly upset by his father’s absence, dedicating his song “My Father’s Eyes” to Fryer in 1988.
