His Return To Music
After quitting narcotics, Clapton apparently sought to court Boyd again, and this time was more successful. Boyd divorced Harrison in 1974 and married Clapton in 1979 after settling down with him. Clapton began recording about this time and had his first chart success with “I Shot the Sheriff” in 1974.
A Massive Drinker
Despite this, the musician kept drinking. And his drinking habit, which was reported to have risen to a couple of bottles of vodka per day in the late 1960s, eventually took its toll on his marriage. In a 1999 interview with the Sunday Times in the United Kingdom, Clapton admits to assaulting Boyd during their time together. He explained, “I know that when I was a full-blown, practicing alcoholic, everyone used to walk around me on eggshells.”
